Clare (as ‘Clara’) was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1087, though there is archaeological evidence of a settlement here going back to palaeolithic times. The Castle is also mentioned in the Domesday Book, so obviously pre-dates this, though this is the earliest reference to it currently known.
